Welwyn Garden City Cricket Club - Junior Cricket

Welcome

Welcome to the Juniors section of Welwyn Garden City Cricket Club!

We are the local cricket club for kids in WGC, Welwyn, Hatfield, and their surrounding villages.

We are a family-friendly club that offers cricket for all girls and boys, whatever their age, ability or previous experience.  We run matches from U9s upwards, but our players can start cricket at age 5.  Every player that wants to play matches will be able to.  We also have a strong performance pathway for our more talented players.

Summer Training 2024

Outdoor Junior Training - Summer 2024

Junior training starts on Sunday 7th April and runs through to the end of August.

Junior league matches start at the end of April and finish in early July.  We then aim to run fun days, summer leagues and additional fixtures over the summer months.

Training takes place at Digswell Park. Session times are:

Girls Hardball: Fridays 5.30pm-7.00pm
Squad manager: tbd
(Girls also train with their age groups)

U5-8: Sundays 9.45am-11.00am
Age group manager: Russell Haggar

U9: Sundays 9.45am-11.00am
Age group manager: Russell Haggar

U10: Sundays 11.00am-12.30pm
Age group manager: Russell Haggar

U11: Sundays 11.00am-12.30pm
Age group manager: Cheryl Worman

U12: Sundays 11.00am-12.30pm
Age group manager: Steve Fry

U13: Fridays 5.30pm-7.00pm

U15: Fridays 5.30pm-7.00pm
Age group manager: Mark Bailey

U16: Fridays 5.30pm-7.00pm
Age group manager: Nishit Shah

Our U5-8 and U9 squads play with a softball.  U10 use an Incrediball.  U11 to U13 play with a junior-size hard ball.  U14 and up play with a senior hard ball.

Protective equipment (helmet, gloves, pads and box) are essential for all hard-ball players.

Juniors are welcome to attend training in general sports kit.  Matches are ideally played in whites, with either a plain or a club playing shirt.  The manager for each age group will provide more information.

The age refers to the school year during which that birthday occurs.  For example, U9 means the school year during which they have their 9th birthday - in most cases, they would be in Year 4.  U11 would similarly be Year 6.

New Players
We welcome new players of all ages and abilities, girls and boys, whether or not they've played cricket before.

New players can try us out for their initial training session for free before deciding to commit.

Please contact our Organiser of Youth Cricket to find out more.

We train indoors from January to March, and outdoors at our ground from April to August.  Our winter nets (Jan-Mar) are an ideal time to get involved.
Club Playing Kit
WGCCC junior playing kit is now supplied by Tylers. The WGCCC Juniors webshop is at https://www.tylers-sportswear.co.uk/Catalogue/Sports-Webshops/Cricket-Clubs/Welwyn-Garden-City-CC.

Juniors can wear plain cricket whites or club kit when playing matches.  For training, any sports kit is fine.
Organiser of Youth Cricket
Our Juniors Cricket Co-ordinator is Russell Haggar (juniorbees@wgccc.co.uk).
