Match report The pitch was in remarkably good condition and a big thank you is due to those who worked hard to ensure the game took place on a grass wicket with a cut outfield, despite the previous month’s rain.
Welwyn won the toss and elected to bat.
The pitch played as slow as expected, and the opposition bowlers were able to extract good movement. This led to a ponderous opening. However with wickets in hand this was not a problem. With the arrival of James Carr the wicket seemed to lose some of its demons and in partnerships with Chris Day and Mario Priolo the score moved along steadily. However following the departure of Mario the innings stalled and after James was out for a well-made 70 the score limped to 152 all out.
Our bowlers than took the fight to the opposition and excellent opening spells from Andy Moscrop and Will Hayward reduced the chase for victory to a crawl. It then became a question of whether we could winkle out the opposition on a wicket that was getting easier to bat on. In the end, despite good fielding, particularly from Leslie Meyer and some excellent spin bowling from Matt Wells ably supported by Man of the Match James Carr, we were unable to overcome a resolute opposition who ended their innings on 132 for 7.
