Match report
With April’s rain all but forgotten we arrived to glorious sunshine and promptly lost the toss! We were of course asked to field, but this proved of little consequence as we started to take wickets immediately. Will Hayward bowled an excellent spell ably assisted by Jay Patel. Having rested the openers the first and second change immediately contributed to proceedings with Dilip Patel bowling a tidy spell of left arm swing. This however proved no match for the sheer audacity of his bowling partner. Showing an absolute belief in his fielders John McGill turned back the clock and helped himself to five wickets, courtesy in part to two outstanding catches by Jay Patel and James Carr. Jordan Brunel was left to clean up the final wicket leaving the opposition high and dry on 113 in less than 2 hours. It should also be noted that due to unforeseen circumstances most of this was achieved with only 10 men.
Welwyn then had the unusual situation of batting before tea. This did not go quite according to plan but runs flowed nicely, mainly off the bat of Terry Edwards who top scored, until around the 60 mark when 3 quick wickets briefly put the result in doubt. However a fine stabilising stand between Nikki Little and Damian Judd took us to the brink of victory and left Jordan Brunel the honour of scoring the winning runs.
This left us plenty of time to watch the 1st team, which was highly entertaining.
