Match report
A blustery overcast day greeted us for our encounter with Hitchin 3rd XI. Continued sterling work by the ground staff ensured that whilst the outfield was a fraction long the wicket was in excellent condition and Welwyn had no hesitation in batting having won the toss.
The late inclusion of Dan Byford meant that our innings started with a “biff” and the score raced along in the early overs. This was continued by a solid contribution from Harry Wells. We then suffered our trademark middle order stumble and had to rely on an accomplished 43 from Jordan Brunel ably assisted by Dan Cope to steady the ship and take us forward. A late cameo by the returning skipper, who had previously retired hurt (with a new ailment!), took the side to 200-8.
Welwyn utilised the old ball and made early in-roads into the opposition batting reducing them to 20-4, Jordan Brunel and Jay Patel sharing the early wickets with Jay narrowly missing out on a hat-trick. However the 5th wicket partnership proved to be a stubborn one and whilst they were never quite up with the asking rate they did eat up valuable overs. When they finally gave up their wickets Welwyn made steady progress. However the time lost in securing the 5th wicket ultimately proved costly and left us with only 4 balls to get the final wicket. Despite a final ball LBW shout the opposition survived and ended 169-9. Jordan Brunel was the leading wicket taker but all the bowlers contributed to a fine bowling display.
