Scorecard

Watford Town (Final) v Welwyn Garden City Cricket Club Under 11B (8-a-side) on Sun 15 Jul 2012 at 13h30
Welwyn Garden City Cricket Club Won by 11 runs

Match report The final was played on a different pitch which looked bowler friendly; and that is how it panned out!
WGC opened the batting with Oliver and Alex. The bowling was tight and straight and after 2 overs WGC had only 5 runs on the scoreboard. Partially due to frustration but also down to some excellent fielding by WT, WGC lost 2 wickets to run-outs in the 3rd and 4th overs. This put a break on the scoring and after 4 overs WGC were on 202. Matt and Finn were next in and again the bowling was very good. Two slow spin-bowlers continued to frustrate the WGC batsman and during the next 4 overs WGC lost a further 3 wickets. Sam W and Adam B were the third pair to bat and they both batted sensibly, realising that it was a tough wicket to bat on and that WT were bowling well. In spite of the good bowling, it didn’t stop Sam W playing the shot of the day, a straight drive for four. They were the only pair not to lose a wicket and picked up 16 priceless runs. Last to bat was Nathan and Sam J. The bowling and fielding continued to be first-rate and WT picked up a further 3 wickets to leave WGC on a disappointing 215 for 8.
Although WGC scored a low total, the boys went out to field in an optimistic frame of mind. Nathan and Oliver opened the bowling and after two overs WT were 6 for none. In Nathan’s second over he bowled an outstanding wicket maiden and Oliver followed this with a maiden. The WGC boys were on their toes, walking in and not offering WT any chance of a quick single. Next to bowl were Sam J and Matt. Sam took an excellent caught and bowled and Matt’s two overs went for only 3 runs. WGC were building the pressure and at the half-way stage WT were 207 for 2. It was Finn, Sam W and Alex’s turn to bowl and in the next four overs WGC bowled, fielded and caught brilliantly. They managed to pick up 5 wickets for no runs. It was nail-biting stuff going into the last four overs. Nathan, Oliver, Matt and Finn bowled the pressure overs and all four bowled exceptionally well, picking up 3 wickets for -4 runs. WT ended their innings on 204 for 10 and WGC had won by 11 runs. The saying ‘catches win matches’ was apt for this match as WGC took 8 catches and didn’t drop one. The highlight was Adam running full-pelt and diving to take a superb catch. All WGC bowling figures were excellent but special mention to Finn for 3 overs 5 wickets for -20; Matt 3 overs 2 for -5 and Nathan 3 overs 1 for -2.
An excellent day and superbly organised by Dunstable CC…many thanks.
